Healthy Food Choices for Hair Growth and Benefits

At Replenish Salon, when we're not talking "hair" our top conversation is "food and exercise!" Many people are starting to jump on board with choosing healthier food alternatives. Social media, popular diet trends, and celebrities are making it easier to adapt a better way of eating and to live. Most recently, the film, “What the Health?” has been trending and many are even considering the Vegan lifestyle. A healthier way to eat is great for the body to avoid disease and health issues, however, there are certain foods that also contribute to hair growth!

1. Salmon-

Salmon not only taste good, but is loaded with Vitamin D and omega-3 that promote hair growth and the scalp healthy. Making sure to consume essential fatty acids, which are also found in walnuts and flaxseeds, promotes a healthy scalp; which is the foundation of your hair growth. Eating a serving of salmon, two to three times week will also benefit your skin as well. Make sure to buy wild caught salmon!

If it’s out of season you can always purchase frozen.

2. Avocados-

Avocados has a high concentration of essential fatty acids as well and are good to consume, offering the vitamin E. Vitamin E improves the blood circulation and helps the follicles work more efficiently to promote hair growth.

For use of application to your hair, you would want to mix with sour cream and an avocado and apply directly to scalp and hair. When applied topically, it can stimulate collagen and the production of elastin to the strand. Just mix a small amount of avocado and the sour cream, apply to damp hair and leave in for 10-15 minutes under a plastic cap.`

3. Citrus fruits, strawberries, and red peppers-

Collagen surrounds the hair strand, but the older we get, it starts to break down, causing your strand to become more vulnerable and susceptible to breakage. Foods high in vitamin C can help boost the collagen, which plays a big part in renewing cells and is responsible for maintaining the strength and elasticity of your nails and hair, ultimately resulting in hair growth. Consuming citrus fruits such as oranges, limes, strawberries, and adding red peppers to your veggies daily, will give your body and hair, a healthy dose of vitamin C.

4. Almonds-

Your hair is made of keratin, which is a type of protein, which are built from amino acids. The amino acids are formed because of the reaction of cell enzymes and biotin. Almonds are rich in biotin, which is a water- soluble vitamin that’s a part of the vitamin B complex. Continual use has proven to thicken hair, add natural shine, and luster.

Eat your almonds!

Whether you are just starting a clean way of eating, pesceterian, vegan, or vegetarian, adding some of these foods to your diet is good for your body and your hair growth journey! As with anything natural, consistency is key! Along with diet and exercise, you are sure to see great results!

Happy hair growing,

Stephanie Lipsey
